5 Benefits of Merino Wool Socks in Summer Heat - FITS®

January 31, 2023

Are wool socks good for summer? Good question! While you may not initially think so, wool socks are actually an excellent choice for keeping feet cool in hot weather. Unlike cotton, wool can absorb large amounts of moisture while regulating body temperature more efficiently, effectively wicking away sweat and keeping feet dry even in hotter climates. Keep reading for five reasons why wearing merino wool socks in summer makes so much sense.

5 Benefits of Wearing Merino Wool Socks in Summer

Merino wool is a standout choice for summer socks. Wool socks can keep you cool and comfortable during the hottest months of the year, whether your days are filled with outdoor activities or long hours indoors. Here’s how they do it.

1. Merino Wool Socks Regulate Temperature

You might not consider wearing wool socks if you suffer from hot and sweaty feet in the summer. But merino wool socks can play an essential part in regulating temperature. Merino wool is a lightweight fabric that absorbs moisture. Yet, it has natural insulation, which helps keep the feet cool in summer and warm in winter, regulating body temperature to keep you comfortable.

2. Merino Wool Socks Control Moisture

Not only are merino wool socks incredibly comfortable and durable, but they also have the added benefit of controlling moisture. Merino wool is naturally absorbent, meaning it soaks up sweat before it can settle on your skin. This keeps your feet dry while you enjoy outdoor activities during the summer months. Additionally, because wool naturally wicks away sweat, wearing merino wool socks in summer offers extra protection against foot problems such as athlete's foot or blisters–perfect for the summer months when feet need the most ventilation.

3. Merino Wool Socks Reduce Unwanted Odors

Merino wool contains fibers with antimicrobial properties that resist odors. So, even when you wear merino wool socks in summer for extended periods of time, your feet won’t stink. You won’t have to worry about your feet smelling bad after an exhausting day if you wear merino wool socks that keep unwanted odors at bay.

4. Merino Wool Socks are Comfortable and Lightweight

Merino wool is naturally one of the softest materials, making for comfortable and lightweight socks for summer. Merino wool socks also provide ample cushioning and protection from the elements, especially the hot sun. Additionally, wool can retain up to 30% of its weight without feeling wet or clammy, making it ideal for a range of summertime activities like hiking, biking, fishing, and more.

5. Merino Wool Socks are Sustainable and Reduce Waste

Merino wool socks are a more sustainable option than traditional cotton or synthetic socks, and they can help reduce waste in a few ways. First, you don't have to switch socks seasonally because you can wear merino wool socks in summer and winter. Wearing the same wool socks throughout the year minimizes waste associated with producing apparel. On top of that, wool sock soles tend to last longer than socks made from other materials. Because of this, you don’t have to replace them as often.

Lastly, because merino wool socks have antimicrobial properties, you can wear them for multiple days before they need to be washed. Merino wool fibers absorb odor-producing germs, preventing them from proliferating or expanding on their surface, saving electricity, water, and soap. So, are wool socks good for summer? Yes! And they’re good for the planet.

How Do You Determine Sock Size?

Sock sizes are typically measured in inches, not by your shoe size. So, a sock size 6-8 will comfortably fit someone whose feet are between six and eight inches long. However, at FITS®, we make it easy for you to choose the ideal sock size without having to measure your foot. Simply use our sock size conversion chart based on your shoe size to select the right fit for you.

How Do You Measure Your Foot for Socks?

To measure your foot for socks, measure the length from the heel of your foot to the tip of your longest toe. The measurement in inches correlates to your sock size. For example, if your foot is 10 inches long, a sock size 9-11 should fit you comfortably. At FITS®, you can skip this step and find your sock size based on your shoe size using our conversion chart.

What Is the Sock Size Conversion?

The sock size conversion refers to sock size compared to shoe size. While all companies may vary slightly on which size socks to purchase based on your shoe size, you can always measure your foot to find the right fit for you.

What is Sock Size to Shoe Size?

Because sock sizes are determined by the length of your foot in inches vs. your shoe size, shoe and sock sizes differ. The FITS® sock size to shoe size conversion is as follows:

Knowing this makes it easy to choose the ideal sock size based on your shoe size without measuring your foot.

What Age is Sock Size 9-12?

Sock sizes typically don’t correlate with age. For kids, age can be a general indicator of what size sock they’ll need, but everyone is different. An adult sock size 9-12 fits anyone whose feet are approximately nine to twelve inches long. For kids’ sock sizing, check with the company to find exact details to ensure your little one gets the perfect fit.
